There are over two hundred public beaches in Mallorca with all of them benefiting from the warm climate and cool Mediterranean sea. Here are a selection of just some of the beaches on the island.

It is probably best to start with the most famous beach on the island, Magaluf beach. Magaluf beach reflects the personality of the town by making enjoyment the top priority. The beach has many sun beds and shades but they are secondary to the sheer variety of available activities. The beach offers banana boats, donuts, parachute , wake boarding, a floating platform with slide and pedlo hire.

Behind the beach are a large collection of beach bars which are a great place to enjoy a quick meal or drink. Similar in many ways to Magaluf beach are the Palmanova beaches: Playa de Palmanova and Son Matias. They also put a focus on fun with many of the same activities in almost the same location, as only about five or ten minutes separate these beaches by foot.

The only real difference is that the Palmanova beaches put more emphasis on families and Playa de Palmanova has a large area shaded by tree’s popular with picnickers, whereas Magalluf beach is a hotspot for the younger crowd.

The beach of Alcudia to the North of the island is another of the best known beaches. It stretches for miles and is the longest beach on the island. With it´s fine sand and shallow water it is easy to see why it is so popular with all ages.

Just outside of Magaluf, hidden by backroads on the way to El Toro, lies Portals Vells. This town boasts a hidden cove that is popular with pleasure boaters who sail their yachts down from nearby ports to enjoy the beautiful coast and cool waters. The cove has three beaches Playa El Mago on the furthest left, which is thankfully not visible from the other two beaches since it allows nudism.

Interestingly the name translates into “the magician”, so named from the sixties film of the same name featuring Michael Caine which was filmed there. The others Sa Caleta and Sa Platega are so close that it is forgivable to group them into one single beach, if it wasn’t for a small rock outcrop separating the two. Sa Platega is right next to the cliffs which feature a set of spectacular man made caves which was quarried out to provide blocks used in the construction of Palma cathedral.

A great beach to visit might be Santa Ponça which at the time of writing is one of 3 beaches on the island to be given the Q award for beach quality. The quality of the beach is exceptional and Santa Ponça guards its reputation carefully going to great effort to keep its beach deserving of the award. In the way of features it has everything you would expect of an award winner, such as fully staffed lifeguards and a flag system to keep you informed of the safety associated with swimming.

It also has pedlos and a banana boat, toilets and many bars and cafes across the road.

A popular beach is Playa de Portals, just next to the prestigious Puerto Portals. This beach boasts its own cove which keep the waters calm in all but the roughest weather, mostly thanks to the small island which lies in front of the beach. The calm waters make it the idea place to sample a new water sport, such as scuba diving, sailing or windsurfing.

Es Trenc beach is in the east of Mallorca near Santanyi. The kilometre long beach has a front of pure white sand and had large dunes at the back making the beach feel isolated from the rest of the world. This beach has very little natural protection from the elements and therefore has some of the best waves on the island for those who prefer that sort of thing.

This beach has views of Cabrera an island that is still part of Mallorca but is protected as a site of natural beauty. Many places do tours of it, if you don’t mind the boat trip.

Of course all the beaches in Mallorca are amazing in their own way, and here only a few have been mentioned. On an island with near perfect summer weather, no tides and perfectly calm seas there are few places where beaches can be more enjoyed than in Mallorca.
