Palma de Mallorca is a haven for shoppers from its fashionable department stores to its small backstreet boutiques.
Palma has something to suit all tastes and means if you know where to look. This is a simple guide to some of the best places to shop in Palma de Mallorca. Just next to the iconic Palma Cathedral lies the Paseo de Born. This large tree lined avenue holds some real treats.
Some of the nicest shops in the city reside here; greats like Louis Vuitton and Hugo Boss have shops here and the famous Spanish shopping chain Zara has one of their largest departments here in this beautiful setting.
At the end of Paseo de Borne marked by an Egyptian style obelisk topped with a bat (the symbol of Palma), runs Avineda de Jaime III. This old street has some of the finest shops in a beautiful setting of arches and wide pavements.
If you are a watch lover Jaime III will not disappoint with both the official dealers of Rolex and Cartier. There is also a shop which is an official dealer of Majorica pearls, an art form native to Mallorca which produce the most wonderful quality faux pearls in the world.
At the top of Avenida de Jaime III is the famous department store El Corte Ingles. This chain of department stores is all over Spain and has two branches in Palma the other being on Avenida Alexandre Rossello. These stores are renowned for their large selection of top designer clothes and accessories as well as selling everything else one could ever need.
They also have excellent supermarkets in the basement and on the top floor of the stores there are nice restaurants with views over the roof tops of Palma.
For those who love to explore the best shopping experience is probably centred around the Plaza Mayor. This old square is dotted with market stalls of the mercat arstesanal, a craft market selling hand made goods and there are street performers such as musicians and human statues.
Surrounding the Plaza Mayor are a collection of wonderful pedestrian streets which wind around filled with many brilliant shops. These shops can be everything from the biggest names in shopping to small family run shops and everything in between, all with an old town Mediterranean feel.
If you get tired while wondering these enchanting streets then why not stop at the famous Gran Cafe Cappuccinos on Carrer San Miguel, set in an old town house from the 16th century this cafe is one of the best locations for tea or coffee in the city.
For an old time shopping experience look into markets in Palma. Like all large Spanish towns Palma has a lot of markets where local goods can be bought such as traditional delicacies and local crafts.
Markets start early in the day and go until about lunch time to avoid the worst of the summer heat. El Rastro is a flea market that swarms Aviniguda Gabriel Alomar every Saturday morning (sure to delight any who enjoy searching for that rare diamond in the rough, but be warned there is a lot of rough).
Also unlike shops markets are a place for haggling.
It is good advice to never accept the asking price, don’t enquire about something unless you are genuinely interested and of course don’t be afraid to say no.
If you prefer to shop indoors, the best mall for shopping is Centro Porto Pi. It lies on the outskirts of the city centre and has an array of clothes and shoe shops to satisfy everyone, all within a comfortable air conditioned environment.
There is a large supermarket on the lower level and also cafes and a MacDonalds too. Just outside there are other restaurants, a bowling alley and a cinema.
Shopping in Palma is an entertaining experience to say the least. It falls down to everyone to find what they want in the end, but Palma is sure to have it for anyone who wants to look. It is not often that a such a good shopping experience is found within such a beautiful location with fantastic history and culture.
